67 BJ8 - Removing Generator

Hi all,

I think the problems and odd sound coming from my Healey is from the generator. I am going to replacing the bushings and other internals in it. Does anyone have any recommendations for the easiest way to remove the generator?

Thanks!
-Brandon

Hi Brandon, I think just remove the coil from its bracket and uplug the wirng from the generator. Then there are two bolts at the front of the generator located on the positoning bracket. The lower one when loosened frees the link and the second one almost hidden under the edge of the pulley must be removed. Attached to the engine is an additional bracket containing two more bolts securing the generator these must also be removed and then the generator can be lifted off.The coil's mounting bracket can now be easily removed if you desire to.---Fwiw---Keoke

Thanks Keoke! Would you recommend replacing the internals myself or taking it to a generator/alternator shop and paying someone to rebuild it? What kind of costs could I expect?

Thanks!
-Brandon

Well Brandon, I guess it depends on the condition of the unit. However, replacing the rear bush, front bearing and the brushes is pretty straight forward,On the otherhand, if the commutator requires turning and undercutting or the brush springs are defective and you lack the proper parts and tools,it probably is best to have it pro-built.---Keoke

I do not have a clue as to what costs would be.---Where in AZ are you? Ole Prescott boy here /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Keoke, I'll have to check it out once I get it out of the car. I'll see from there if I will do it myself or have it pro-built.

I'm in North Phoenix. We actually just moved here in June. Kinda hot then, but the weather sure is paying off now!

The generator in my 64 BJ8 melted down and I had Star Auto Electric in Monrovia, CA rebulid it. If you conclude that this is the way you wish to go, I can heartily reccommend these folks. Great service...generator runs and looks great. Here's the web address www.starautoelectric.com/Home.htm
Good luck.

j eade, good stuff, and for anyone interested in reversing the polarity of your car[seems to be the thing these days]there are simple printable instructions on how to do so on the above site. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif
