66 sprite dash

Should the dash on a 66 Sprite be covered with vinyl, or painted?? You can tell that I don't have a lot of experience with Sprites!!

Larry,

I think the 66 is the same as my 65. It whould be crinkle painted black. I redid mine and I have to admit with cleaned up gauges and switches it looks beautiful.

Be sure and prep the piece good before putting on the paint.

Thanks, Mark - I've been trying to figure out how I can brighten up my wife's Sprite a little bit, without investing too much time. One of the first things I noticed was the condition of her dash. I recovered my 100-6's dash last fall, and I thought about doing the Sprites, but it looks like it was originally painted, so I thought I'd better ask. Sounds like a good project!

The crinkle finish paint is available from you various chain auto stores, is sensitive to temp and thickness of application, and how far you hold the thing away, crinkle will vary based on these factors, I have had decent results doing a couple dashes, but did find it a little tricky to get it uniform.

My secret to perfect wrinkle finish painting is to follow the directions EXACTLY.
3 coats 10 minutes apart. Start on a sunny day, put the dash on something you can carry out into the sun, a board or something like that.
Paint it 3 coats in the garage to keep the bugs, dust, and leaves off it.
5 minutes or so after the last coat, put it out in the direct sunlight and it will wrinkle up in about 10 minutes.
Now bring it in the garage, do not touch it as it takes a day to fully cure.
I would pick a warm day to do this, not 70 or so but at least 45* or so.
I have done it in the winter and it works fine, just not sure about 15* even if it's sunny.

I agree, good information, I did not think it worked when I first but it on so I coated it again. I did have sense enough to leave it alon e and it came out nice. It does take at least 24 hours to cure. Keep your hands and fingers off of it. (how do I know that?)
