A fun note on that article. It mentions that at the time of development IH had no in house engines for the Scout. They came up with one quickly by creating a slant 4 from half of one of their V8s.

Interesting - My Vauxhall is basically the opposite. It has a slant 4 that was also intended to be half a V8 and a diesel. In fact the casting is strong enough that they we able to get about 250 horse out of the racing version. That said the slant four was the only engine ever produced.
