64 Surround Assembly, air intake

64 BJ8. There are two chrome pieces that get fitted to the hood air intake area. The Surround Assembly and the grill air intake.

Question is, does the top of the small grill air intake fit inside the hood air intake slot and the Surround Assembly on top of the hood. Thereby having the sheet metal of the hood between the two pieces?

Or does the Surround Assembley air intake lay right on top of the Grill air intake. Then both pieces together go on top of the hood and get bolted through the three holes?

Fresh paint job and don't want to scratch it, trying to figure how assembly goes.

I plan on using 3 nylon lock nuts to tork it down. Any suggestions as to how to do this, so as not to put dimples in the Surround Assembly air intake when tightening it down?

Thank you, Roger

Hi Roger,

I recall the parts sandwich the hood intake i.e. grill on the inside and trim piece with studs on the outside. Make up some rubber shims/washers to go on the studs and fill the gap between the trim and hood to prevent the studs from pulling in too far (I used some putty, lightly installed the pieces, removed and measured the putty thickness to arrive at the shim thickness) . I used blue locktite and installed the nuts with a nut driver so that I could feel it getting tight and quit before deforming the trim. Use some masking tape on the hood scoop to prevent scratches on installation and then remove before doing the final tightening. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
John

on second thought .. I checked some of my books and it appears both parts go on the outside of the scoop .. otherwise a good bit of the intake chrome would be hidden.

Roger,

I unpacked my newly chromed surround and intake grill and tryed them out on the hood. The surround (or trim piece) fits nicely against the scoop, no major gaps or problems. If I put the intake grille on top first then there are major fit problems .. the surround is too high off the surface. When I put the intake grille on the inside it fits well but the lower portion is hidden behind the lower portion of the hood opening. I *think* the grille intake goes on the inside but the bottom edge should go over the bottom flange of the opening. Unfortunately the chrome and paint thickness is preventing me from being able to do this. I suspect I will need to modify the bottom edge of the grille intake. Before I do this I will look at some other cars and/or wait for some other to respond to this thread. Any takers?

Cheers,
John

John, your second post explains exactly what I've tried.

"I *think* the grille intake goes on the inside but the bottom edge should go over the bottom flange of the opening."

"Unfortunately the chrome and paint thickness is preventing me from being able to do this."

Fresh paint, new chrome with sharp edges. Measure twice, cut once, as they say.

Anyone else shed some light on this?
As always, thank you. Roger

Yes that is correct and I use small rubber grommets to avoid the dimpling.---Fwiw---Keoke
