62BT7 Speedometer Problelms

Speedometer was acting erratic and not at all accurate. I replace the speedometer cable with new one and problem persists. It might register 60MPH when I'm going 20 and it is constantly changing even at steady speed. Sounds like a speedometer problem. Does anyone have experience in this area.. Thanks in advance.

It sounds like the needle bearing which supports the drag cup is beginning to stick. Do not let this go. Get the gauge checked and serviced now before the bearing seizes to the shaft that the pointer is on. Once the bearing seizes, it drives the needle all the way around the gauge face to the hard stop. Usually in the process it destroys the hairspring that returns the needle to its zero/rest position when you're stopped. Once this happens the repair gets very expensive.

I used MO MA, 1321 Second St NW, Albuquerque, NM 87102, 505 766-6661. Cost of mine was $165. Generally, She would like you to send in the speedo, cable, and cable housing. Nosinger's on the east coast is good as well.

Before sending in the speedometer for repair you might want to check the 90 degree fitting on the transmission. You'll have to remove the transmission cover to work on it but it just might be ready to separate. Before mine finally fell apart it was acting the same way. You could borrow a spare speedometer from someone and connect your cable to it and go for a drive.
Good Luck

I have no experience with the right-angle drives. Since Johnny has seen similar behavior when these go bad you certainly have reason to check it.

I was going to recommend Nisonger for east coast speedo repairs... but that's already been done.

Johnny,

Great idea to check the right anlgle drive - thanks. It looks like it comes off pretty easy. What should I expect to see in there if it's bad ????

Keoke says; "you might see dried up grease or chewed up gears",and you should see a fibre washer just under the screw on cap.Should this washer be missing it will bind up the speedo cable---Fwiw---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
