TR2/3/3A 61 tr3 fan belt alignment

I posted this awhile back and I am still not sure what to do about the alignment of the fan belt on the pulleys on my tr3. I am using all original parts Generator and lower bolt piece, water pump, and crank pulley. However, it still looks like the belt is in about 3/16 in at the water pump. I know about the shims at the crank, but do not think that will fix it. When I put a straight edge on it, it looks like the generator sticks out too much, but to fix that I would have to cut about 3/16 off the original spacer piece bolt thingy and bend back the generator bracket. I do not like cutting original stuff. I guess I could buy a new one from Moss and cut that one. Has anybody had a similar problem?

Just a thought, have you checked the engine front plate for flatness? They do sometimes get bent in accidents, although it would have to be a pretty strange one to bend only at the generator mount.

Also, if you do trim the generator pedestal, be sure to do something at the back of the generator to match. The generator end brackets break easily.

The alignment on mine are not perfect, in both cases (TR3 & TR4) they (like yours) have the H2O pump set back a bit. Not sure that it is as much as 3/16" but quite noticable.

I wonder if you can use a large washer inside the waterpump pulley to bring it out a bit?

Steve,

Do you have a picture?

'53, funny you posted this, I've always worried about the alignment, as well:

However, in the 5 years I've had my '3, it's never presented a problem. When I pull the carbs later this year for a rebuild, I'll examine the gen mount, but like yours, my '59 is all original, so likely it's always been this way. I don't run the gen belt tight at all, so no problems there. I do think it's interesting others have chimed in with the same observation....

My '59 looks just the same until now I thought that it was damaged, but looking at it many times that I couldn't see how the blt could run so straight if it was.

I guess Triumph figured that close is good enough.
