60 bugeye carbs????

can someone pleaase help!!! I cant seem to get these su's to adjust,Im new here and have only owned this BE 11 months. New coil,points&condencer roter arm,and plugs,it did start but would only idle.also it was idleing very rough thanks in advance oh one more thing lots of gas comeing from the float overflow tubes.thanks.keith.

If you have lots of gas coming out the overflow tubes, the float valve is stuck or leaking. First thing is to fix that and, while you're at it, make sure the float level is correct. You don't have a prayer of adjusting things right until those two things are OK. The fuel level in the bowls must be correct or you won't get the mixture right.

Second, how long has it been since the carbs were rebuilt? The fact that the float valves are not working implies that it might have been a while. If so, you might have a hard time getting them adjusted. Often as they get older, the throttle shafts wear at the point where they go through the body of the carb, and you get air leakage. Again, it's impossible to adjust them right if this is happening.

Once these are OK, take a look at the Wiki (General Tech Articles section) and there is some info on tuning the carburetors. There is also info in virtually any shop manual. If you don't have one, start with the Haynes manual. It's cheap and readily available.

Sounds to me like you want a fix. "Credit card and a telephone" is advice you could get anywhere but the fact that you're posting here tells me you want help understanding and fixing the carbs. These carbs are SUPER simple and there is no reason to be intimidated by them. So here we go.

The float level IS crucial in these cars due to the way the needle and jet configuration is set up in the carb. If you look at the pic below, you'll see that the level of fuel in the bowl is the same as the level in the jet and vice versa due to the fact that liquid always maintains level. If that level goes up high enough (like coming out of the overflows), you can see in the picture that it is also going to be coming out of the jet unimpeded and directly into the mouth of the carb causing a runaway rich condition. These carbs, like almost all carbs, work on the Venturi prinicipal so even if the level is high, it's going to effect the mixture. That's why jets are adjustable (within limits). So once the fuel level is set within spec, then you can adjust the jet level with the 5/8s adjustment nuts near the bottom of the carb.

Start there and then, if things still seem amiss, we can tackle the next set of problems as they arise.

That is the nicest cleanest pic of a carb I have seen.

Carbs are easy. lots of folks here can help. Just keep talken to us.
 
Uhhhhh...I DID point him to some self help and suggested
there are good books. I DID not mean for him to abandon all
hope and just buy new. I agree a GOOD carb is easy to tune.
Heck I just switched out a good carb for an upgrade all
by my ol all thumb self. Even tuned the suckers.
I did have the aid of a Unisyn and Colortune. I couldn't
be more pleased with how it runs now.
It ain't rocket science. I was just pointing out that IF
he can't solve his dilemma on his own with proper education that there are sources available for rebuilds.
One need only to scan this forum briefly to learn that
SU carbs CAN be perplexing. Sorry if it was interpreted
as tuning 'em is beyond mere mortal abilities.
Give it go....bet ya get it humming in no time.
 
hey thanks for all the great advice I belive I have the h1 su's I also have the hanes book from the local liberary, Ithink Ill ckeck the float level tonite and yes Id realy like to learn more about these fun lbc's if Im goaan drive em. again thanks for the help,its nice to have such knowlageable people to ask oh yea its a 948 and a carb rebuild is due im sure only time &money and alittle luck will tell

If you do re-build get quality parts. Having the desire to
do it yourself is part of the fun of these LBCs!
It is so refreshing to have a car without all the electronics
that you find on new cars. These boys were built to be
serviced by the owner, IMHO. That is one of the reason we all
love 'em so.

ahhhh...the never ending quest for Spridget speed... that's a whole nutter subject.

heh, speed is fun, but with it comes worry - I like driving my Sprite - almost impossible to get a ticket in it

I also like driving my Midget, but have to keep a close eye out.
