I sent a note to Quantum to see if they could use this instead of the 5 speed
6 speed .

Don't forget the digital gear position reader so that you'll know what gear you're in and don't blow the engine downshifting into first at 90 MPH.

Ah, I'll think I will draw the line in the sand there.

Only one of the options offers a ratio higher than 1 : 1 And that one is still not as high as I've got with my old-school O.D. I think they are not actually trying to hit our market.

You could probably get a Miata six-speed trans for less than 1/10 of that cost (but top gear is basically 1:1 so you'd need a final drive swap too if you wanted better cruising).
Too bad no one has engineered this swap...it would kind of neat (if possible).

And I know it's heresy, but you could even swap in a Miata six-speed *and* engine for much less than that Quaife unit.

I seriously considered this when restoring the TR3...OK, I'll go in my corner and not mention any more blasphemous ideas.

Also, those gears in there are straight cut. That should make for an incredible amount of extra noise!

Talk about a close ratio gear box. 6th is still a 1 to 1 ratio. I have a close ratio 5 speed in my BMW 2002(same tranny used in the Jensen Healy 5 speeds), and it's a pain in the butt for anything other than road racing. Depending on tire size and final drive ratio, you might have to shift that thing 4 times just to get to 60MPH. For the cost of that tranny you could adapt a T56 out of a Vette. If you don't have that much power, use a Getrag out of a Beemer.

Yeah, that's a really neat tranny and I can't imagine why it wouldn't bolt up to QM's T-9 adapater plate, but I also agree that with those ratios, it's meant for track-use more so than driver-duty.

Unless Quaif has some sort of automatic clutch system in the works, I doubt there will be a paddle-shifting option (although I can imagine it would be possible). From what I understand, few drivers who would make use of this transmission would be using the clutch during any shift except 1st (from a dead-stop). They would rev-match all other shifting.

Regardless, this is definitely on my "dream list" in case I'm ever able to build my "track-rat" GT4/Spitfire "leMans". :driving: :jester:

Oh... and there was a discussion on GRM about installing a Miata drivetrain in a MGB... No. It's not exactly common, since a V8 goes in fairly easily with a much bigger pay-back.
possible, but not "common". Easier to just climb into a Miata.
But why would ya want to?

Miata engines are somewhat common swaps for MGBs, no?

Grassrootsmotorsports had a three article series about this a few years back. It was actually a good swap. The engine and transmission can be found quite cheap.
