6 degrees of separation - job needed

Elliott, never new you position.
My regards

I've been out for a while, too. Elliot and I have commiserated with each other on several occasions. I'm another dinosaur!

Peter, I'll keep my ears and eyes open for you, Wisconsin ain't that far away... and I have some tips and advice for you. Are you on LinkedIn? If not, get on and we'll take things from there.

I found you on there. Sent you a connection request.

This new-fangled internet thingie is a wonderful thing!! Do you think it will last???!!!

*snork*

'nother dinosaur here. No "job fair" has ever resulted in so much as a nibble for me. I liken 'em to the "cattle call" for actors. LinkedIn and local networking are more likely to yield positive reward. I've been without a "real" job for too long now, but the kit-bag is diverse enough so far to keep me from panhandling (though THAT may be more lucrative, apparently  ).

A lot of folks are scrambling, IMO us boomers should be the last ones to be needing work. Everything is upside-down. If 60 is the new 40, somebody needs to get that info out to the REST of the country. We've skillsets and experiences "to die for" and in the main still vital enough to USE 'em to advantage.

Steve, Elliot... Either one of your CV's should have any discerning headhunter salivating to rep you. Instead, you're "waay overqualified"-- code for: "too old to begin the training". feh.

Can't comment too much further as to how I perceive it, as it would see me banned...

Headhunters?... In my book they are nothing more than "flesh peddlers". I have not met one that was even remotely professional. I can relate a horror story with one headhunter who arranged a "phone meeting" with a potential employer for me... the only problem was that the employer never agreed to the "meeting" in the first place. To say the least, it was very awkward :frown:

One more thing... one of my friends suggested that I "dumb-down" my resume. I told him I worked all my life to get it where it is!

Again good luck, and my best wishes to you all, especially to those of you readers out there in the same position who are not writing in. Less calls are coming in from the clients here these days. I find myself drawing upon skillsets that have lain dormant for years. My drywall guy is hurting, while I'm out there with the screwgun, knives and pan. Today I am off to paint, while my usual painter can't find work to pay his bills. Last month found me doing actual finish wood work. I've got work lined up for a few months in advance, a spiral staircase, a deck and some custom milling. Things are moving slow here, but I do see more trucks laden with goods upon the highways. My tight friend is losing her teaching job due to the state cutbacks. I get more calls from guys looking for work. We read the obits at coffee and it turns out nobody anyone owes money to ever dies. We are thinking of opening a longevity website, send your money to P.O. Box... Time to stay creative.. notice I don't say time to be creative for we've been forced to be so for some time now. Enough of this rant , good luck, don't weaken, you are here for a reason, enjoy the good parts. I'm off to the mines. --elrey

I've been having great success with two sites - LinkedIn and Indeed. Between those two resources, I've almost daily contacts or new postings to reach out to. I've rounded third and headed for home about 4 times now, only to be "thrown out at the plate". I understand that there many, many folks out there that don't even get to first base these days. I keep swinging, my "pitch" will come.....

(I have NO idea where that whole baseball metaphor came from! LoL )

Well Peter... my grandfather was a diamond cutter - he mowed the field at Yankee stadium

Same at this end of th' swamp. Found ourselves in the middle of a laundry room build-out here at th' hovel and an absolute halt to any incoming client calls... ALL STOP on the home-improvement work. :wall:

I've got a possible "short week" job, goin' back to twistin' wrenches on a Eurotrash project. Anything wot pays!

Another good reason to develop a wide set of skills. I have the advantage of being a musician as well as a computer geek, and my music work has filled in on a number of occasions (sometimes completely) when I or my wife have been "between paychecks" for a while. Flexibility is always key.

Best of luck to all of you who are out there trying to work out a new situation.

My parents were in Iron and Steel. Momma would iron and daddy would steal.

Pete,
I have been on the hunt since last November. 20 years in the service, couple of years as a purchasing manager, then let go. Now I am turning wrench in my buddies shop on vintage cars to make ends meet. I guess it turned out to be a blessing in disquies. Keep your chin up!

Hey, turning wrenches on vintage cars would be considered by many here to be the perfect job! Good for you!

I can tentatively announce that I have interviewed for a position, and am scheduled for a second interview on Wednesday. It's as Internet Sales Manager (internet, social media marketing etc) for a Jaguar/Land Rover Dealership about seven miles away from my home

Keep everything crossed for me, guys. I NEED this job!

Rooting BIG time for you there, Steve!!

That's EXCITING, Steve!

That's wonderful Steve!!! They won't find a better person for the job! Best of luck.

Hope the job search is progressing, I'm off to PAINT! Yikes. Keep this under your hats, as I think there may be laws against carpenters holding paintbrushes. --elrey
