6 cylinder engine weight?

I was talking to a guy awhile back about Jaguars and he had mentioned that the 6 cylinder engines out of the XJ's weight 300 pound more than a typical small block Chevy.

Are they really that heavy?

I don't have an exact answer, but I recently sold a 45,000 mile 1986 XJ6 engine and was told by a local Jaguar mechanic to estimate shipping costs based on a weight of around 700 lbs. I thought that this sounded a bit heavy but another Jaguar owner told me that he had purchased a similar engine, a 4.2L 6-cylinder, some time ago and that he recalled the weight to be around 650 lbs. I ended up selling the engine, but fortunately the buyer lives in the next state, so I was not put in the position of crating it and having it weighed for freight preparation. As for the weight of the Chevrolet engine, I have no answer... I can only surmise that if they weigh around 350 to 400 lbs., that a 300 lb. difference is a pretty accurate estimate. The published weight for a complete small block Chevy, with a cast iron intake manifold is 575 lbs. Having shipped many of them, that is a fairly accurate figure, and includes bellhousing, flywheel and clutch. The only Jag figures I could come up with were for a V-12, at 680 lbs.
I did find a reference to the fact that with the removal of all the V-12 ancillaries, the weight savings in the small block conversion for the V-12 was in the neighborhood of 300 lbs.
I don't think that the six was heavier than the V-12, do you?

Hello all,
my Jaguar XK engine book quotes the weight at about 8 cwt (896lbs) for the engine and gearbox unit. Perhaps this is where the 300 lbs difference has appeared, missing out that it is not a fair comparison. I don't know the gearbox weight alone but they are not a couple of pounds.

This won't answer your question but provides a nice comparision: the 1998/2500cc Triumph engine as used in TR6, GT6, Vitesse, etc., weighs about 660 pounds. The Rover/Buick, aluminium block 3200 cc V/8 weighs about 600 pounds.

This would make the 4.2 litre Jag 6 quite lightweight by comparison.

Looks like the Jaguar 6 cyl in indeed heavier but probably more realisticly by 150# or so. Maybe he was talking about the 12 cyl when he refered to the 300# weight difference.
