TR2/3/3A 57 tr3 steering box

Having driven TR3s since I was 16, I seem to remember always having a mess around the steering box and having to add oil in the shaft at the rubber plug. Now that I am 63 and rebuilding a steering box, can I just fill it with grease, either lithium or even a heavier wheel bearing grease?

Yeah, you can do that.
But be prepared to take it back out, fully disassemble it, wash all the grease out, and put it back together again with proper lubricant.
You won't be able to turn the wheel comfortably, and the grease won't get down into the sector shaft bushing, and it will kill it, even if you can figure out how to steer it.
At least that's been my experience on manual boxes on other marques when they came in here like that.

You could do that, but doing it right makes a world of difference in how easily the car steers. Replace the bushing and seal, put some quality synthetic gear oil in there and enjoy.

BTW, if you do choose to go the grease route, there is a Penrite product intended for the purpose. It's basically a semi-liquid grease.
