Is this ball joint TD also? It has some play in it so I need to repair it. I have some shims around from when I repaired my TR 4 rack, it presented no problems.

Is there a better way of getting this apart than clamping it in a vice, putting a punch in the hole and beating on it. I have already tried that in gentle way and hate to damage it. Will a little heat on the housing help? Is it lefty loosey or otherwise. Is there someone I can send to to if special skills or tools are required.
 
I've got a spare TD rack on the bench at home and need to check it to see. How would you go about repairing a TD Rack? Yourself?
 
The rack itself is ok. Just to much play in the joint. By using shim material I should be able to adjust the clearance between the cup and the ball to eliminate the play. The problem is getting it apart, I don't want to break, crush the thing repairing it. My guess is I will have to heat the housing, want to get some feedback from others who have done this.
 
Are they not supose to be replaced when no longer tight?
 
Figured it out. I built a piece to clamp the male ball joint compressing in bench vice and used a piece of solid copper rod and a hammer to turn the female.

Once I had a good grip, it came apart quite easily. Turns out there were three shims were between the two pieces so I removed one. The ball and seat were fine no pitting. I put some fresh grease in it and reassembled. Much better.

Much like how an MGB disassembles.
 
On an MGB rack, or TD for that matter, is this the extent of repairs "typically" needed to tighten them up? The rack on my 74 is rattley and I am unhappy with it.

After my initial post I did some more research on the problem. (without the BCF and internet I would be totally lost on this project). I found this site, they clamped it in a vice heated it up and used a pipewrench, very ugly process. However there is some good info here about rebuilding the entire rack, should be of help to you. Rack Repair

I have not overhauled the complete rack just the inner joints. The jig I built allowed me to properly and firmly grip the joint half without buggering it up in a vice. It only took a few minutes to make using a drill press and hole saw.
