I listened to the first orbital flight of NASA, John Glenn, on a Hitachi transistor radio I ferreted into my classroom. Mother dutifully ran a reel-to-reel tape recorder at home to catch the entire flight in case we weren't able to listen.

What times.
 
What a day it was. Preparations, count down, lift off, updates from the studio. We watched and listened as much as we could during school, then continued when we got home - on our big ol' 1954 RCA color TV.

And the heat shield crisis during the return to earth - talk about tense!

Me too doc! As a seventh grader I was riveted to all the news I could get about those seven men. I even tried to get my mom to take me into the city (NYC) to watch the parade that followed.
What happened to those glorious times we had growing up?

I recall it, but none of the details and really only because my brother was having his eyes uncrossed in the hospital that same day. But then again, I was only 4 and a half.
 
Now we can't even get a man to the space station.
