Yes, amazing it's been than long (and that wqe're that old!)
I recall my cousins in the UK calling us (around '62) and asking my parents about the Beatles . We'd never heard of them up to that point.

One of my sisters would go absolutely crazy if she knew they were within a 100 miles from us! It took a week for her to settle down if she saw them. She drove My dad of his rocker when this happened. 
I have 4 younger sisters, needless to say, that's a little much for any guy to take. I really had a rough life growing up and being a watch dog!

In my younger days I sailed out of Liverpool as Midshipman and later as Deck Office in the Merchant Navy. I went to college in Byrom Street; the building is no longer there, and the roads aren't much like they used to be.
Anyway, it wasn't much of a walk across the square to the Cavern, and I saw the Beatles often back then. We had no idea what an impact they'd make.
In 1961 I met a 17-year-old girl who worked for the same shipowning company that did. It will be our 47th Wedding Anniversary at the end of this month. Also in 1961 a ship was launched, and later this year in October, there'll be a reunion in Liverpool of those who sailed on her. My wife and I plan to be there!
This is a long memory lane for me.

Saw a good tribute band last week down in Wichita Falls called Liverpool Legends. It was a very good show if anyone has the chance to see them I'd recommend it.

I wonder if the Beatles would have risen to the level of fame they finally achieved had McCartney (a much better bassist/musician than Sutcliffe) and Ringo (a much better drummer that Pete Best) had not joined the group.

Yeah, I knew it was something related to the brain.
Hard to say about the other stuff. McCarthy was still in the band....just not the bass player.
I guess I've always heard the Pete Best and Ringo were both weak drummers.....so that's a hard question. I would say that Ringo seemed to have more charisma. And many saw his quirky, left-handed drumming as "interesting". I think that in the Beatles they used to joke that Paul and John were better drummers than him.

Ringo was a professional drummer, Best wasn't. You're right about McCartney come to think of it - they used to be a 5-member band.
