Recently I bought John U Bacon’s new book (“The Gales of November”) on the sinking of the Mighty Fitz. It’s a Christmas present for my Dad so I haven’t read it yet but after having read some of his other stuff I am sure it’s an excellent read. He has explained in interviews the Gordon Lightfoot hit about the incident and explains how Lightfoot was reluctant to record the song because he didn’t want to be seen as exploiting such a tragedy. Eventually Lightfoot was persuaded to give it a shot in the studio which was recorded and released after the first take. The families of the crew members who perished that day loved it. More importantly, since the Edmund Fitzgerald sank, the safety regulations were updated and not a single lake freighter has been lost since…

I am reading that book now and I agree that it is a good read. It covers a lot more than just the actual sinking, and I have learned a lot about the lakes and the whole industry. Years ago, I was flying on a series of fires in northern Minnesota. On a day off. I went into Duluth and took a tour of a sister ship to the Fitzgerald. If that ship is still there, the tour is well worth it.
