5 speed trans

I have a 1977 MGB and I am debating on whether to install a 5 speed trans such as a Rivergate conversion or purchase an overdrive unit from a "B" that is in good condition. Is there much of a difference and which is more reliable? Any help is great, Thanks Dave
 
Considering it would be from a 280Z I would say it would be far more dependable than an overdrive. That is assuming of course the transmission you get is in good shape. Might wind up being more expensive.

If your not worried about originality I would go for a conversion, better ratios, quieter, less oil leaks, and no electronics for 5th gear!
 
Exactly what Eric said.... The '81 - '83 Datsun 280zx tranny has a .75 5th gear ratio, compared to a .83 ratio for the LBC O/D - as well as the earlier Datsun and the Ford trannies. I picked one of these up at a local pull-apart for $110, and another member paid ~$70 for his. Having it inspected and serviced, if needed, still makes it cheaper than an O/D - even with the cost of the kit.

I'm not concerned with originality as much as dependable. As I'm a mechanic, I can do my own work and the thought of not having to pull the trans and engine to change a clutch has a huge appeal to me. This car is for Annie and I to travel the eastern seaboard of Canada and the U.S. on our time and on our terms. I would also like to put a small cam in it so that I can run the big highways if I have to. This forum is great and I really like the interaction. Thanks Dave
 
It depends on what you want from the car. The 5-speed kits work fine and have the advantage of being cheaper to rebuild. They may be a bit lighter than the late model overdrive units also.

The overdrive units work great as well, and have the advantage of being a cool period piece. Plus, certain overdrive boxes offer 3rd overdrive as well so they are sort of a 6-speed box. 3rd OD is very useful for some types of driving like canyons, light traffic and long grades where 3rd is too low and 4th is too high.

I personally prefer the overdrive because I'm after a true vintage motoring experience. Plus I love being able to shift by flipping a lever. It's just fun! But originality and cost comparison aside, the 5-speed is probably more practical being a modern component.
 
ditto what Steve said. I'm grabbing a 280Z 5-speed but it's for a car that is too much trouble to put an OD in. My 73 and 74.5 BGT both have OD and I have another one in storage. I love 3rd and a half.
