Curious if anyone has had experience with trying to fit a Datsun 63 serie's transmission in a spridget. I know they are a larger trans so I suspect interference. Just wondering where and how much. Would it be necessary to do a bunch of cutting or just some " metal massage".

Kurt.

Large gearbox... fitted to US B210's

It requires cutting the crossmember to make room. There are there issues with the fork placement (fork is on right side like rib cage) and rear mount. I think input splines are the same as is bell housing bolt pattern, but output splines are different. Slightly different clutch too. It can be done, but a lot of work.

Edit: Correction- input splines are different. Clutch is same diameter, but different friction disc= 24 spline, not 18.

Are the gearboxes stronger? What are the gear ratios?

Seems like I remember a guy on the spridgets list having done this.

David Riker did it many years ago. I've personally seen his car, but I think it's since been totaled. I can't remember if he resurrected it since.

It's a much stronger box, to the point of overkill. It's typically used for the L series engines and is a dogleg/Rallye pattern, If you want a more rugged box that is easy to fit, the '79 210 dogleg version fills the bill.

That's the one I have - nice gearbox.
The ratio is a little shorter than the standard 210 type 60 box but I like it. I get about 63 MPH at 3000 rpm in 5th gear and that beats the heck out of driving up closer to 4000 rpm.

OK- I had always heard that the "63" box was too big but a guy just stopped by who has one in his Bugeye- he had a loose 63 and I fit it inside the tunnel of my '69 to check and found that it fits fine (after you remove the reverse light switches). He had cut the upper crossmember and reinforced it (to clear the crank pulley and cut into the heater boxbut I think that if the trans bellhousing is cut similar to the way it is done to put the 210 trans into the Morris that it would be the only modification needed.
I am preparing to check that out.

That would open up a LOT of possibilities.
WTG Bill, I'm all ears on this one.

Well I was aware the 63 box was a lot stronger and believed that racer's prefered it. Was not aware that the 79 210 dog leg box was stronger. Probably more trouble than I would want to get into. Would have to have a different output yoke made to match the splines for one thing and of course trans and motor mounts made even if Bill finds out that it will fit without too much butchery.
Be interested in following the fit of the guy you have been talking to, though, Bill.

Somewhere in my Datsun stuff I have the ratio's. If I can find them I will post but if memory serves me I believe the 79 210 box has better ratios than the later box and I don't recall on the 63 box.

I bought a 79 210 dogleg that will be going in my bugeye with the 1275 when it's ready.

I didn't realize this trans had different ratios than the later 210 trans.

If anyone knows the specific differences/ratios please post.

Fred

It's on the Datsun1200 wiki, it's been posted here before.
I'll go dig it up again.

Sounds like Eric (guy with the B210 trans in his bugeye) will be over at Phil's on Oct1 for the "NOSHXXX". Car should be running by then. I just stuck the loose tranny in my car to see the fit today.
Come on over for the day (its only a 3 day commute each way!) and check it out for yourself!
Bill

Thanks Rick, I knew I had read that somewhere!!
On the refresh, IMHO I like the ratios of the 63 best of all though the 60L with a little lower 5th has possibility. Could run a 3.7 diff as, I believe you are, and have all around better gearing especially with a A 15.

Kurt.

Bill:
I hope to do that commute some day soon but the 1st of Oct is a little too soon!
I'll have to ask you for your expert opinion on fit instead!?

Kurt.

I've had one in the bugeye for about 28 years. Had a friend in Colo. when I lived there do it for me and him... The summary is correct. The front Crossbar has to be notched as does the right front rail and the heater box has to be slightly altered. I'm planning to show up on Oct 1 if you wana look.... 5th is slightly lower ratio than the 210. Of course a very beafy unit. Eric
