5-Speed conversion up-date

With way too much time on my hands I began the conversion process.
Below are some photos detailing the steps I have gone through to remove the tranny.
From top to bottom:
Bleed and remove the clutch slave cylinder
Remove the speedo cable
Disconnect the rear drive flange from the drive shaft (prop shaft for Steve  )
Out she comes with a little help from below with a floor jack.
Since I have a flat finger pressure plate, I will need to replace it with a bent finger pressure plate to accommodate the new hydraulic throw-out bearing.
edit: Drive shaft out for balancing today.
To be continued.......

Note: if you have any heater issues, NOW would be the time to address them :yesnod:

Re: 5-Speed conversion up-date

Which one Elliot?

Re: 5-Speed conversion up-date

HVDA (I know there are others, just the one I decided to go with)

Re: 5-Speed conversion up-date

Nice looking job so far. Keep the pics coming Elliot!

am i wrong, or aren't you supposed to switch to a solid driveshaft?

Actually, you can use either a solid OR the stock shaft with a locking collar... so you are not wrong.
Since there can only be one "slip" joint in the shaft the locking collar keeps the shaft from sliding in.
The solid shaft might be the better way to go, but then you would have to drop the differential to install it. For now, I will go the locking collar way and possibly change to a solid in the future.

Re: 5-Speed conversion up-date

OK, I read about the locking collar in Bobby D's excellent write up, and I figured the HVDA kit covered all the bases...but I wasn't sure

carry on, sir

Re: 5-Speed conversion up-date

Everything is so clean, can't seem to make that happen here. When you are done enjoy not having bad synchro's.

Right you are Richard.... My second gear synchro has been a problem ever since I put the car back on the road. By the way, I did put a NEW synchro in when I rebuilt the car. I've heard that there was a bad batch of 2nd gear synchros being sold by the suppliers.
Oh well, I am looking forward to a more reliable tranny with this setup.

You are correct... the HVDA kit comes with everything required. It even comes with "Herman" who is always there to answer any questions you might have along the way!

Elliot......you ought to talk to Herman about the driveshaft as he's pretty adamant these days that a 1 piece solid shaft is the only way to go. The "locking" collar doesn't really lock anything......it just a dust shield. When I had my solid drive shaft made (about $150 with new u-joints) the mechanic took my TR6 shaft, locked it down, and proceeded to easily pull it apart. He agreed with Herman that the lock doesn't lock. Having said that I know guys running the stock shaft but for me it wasn't worth the risk.

YMMV.....

My 2nd gear synchro has been problematic too. I know my tranny was just rebuilt before I got my spit, so I guess its pretty normal. I don't mind it, as it means my wife refuses to drive my car because she does not want to revmatch 2nd when downshifting
