No, the Midgets never has five-speed trannys. Four plus (if you are lucky) overdrive, same as the MGB and Spitfire. The later Midgets did indeed share the 1500cc Spitfire engine.
although, im sure there is a conversion kit avalable, there is for the B, it uses the gearb ox from a Ford Siera, and a different bell housing and prop shaft
Midgets never got the Spitfire overdrive box. Spitfires had it as an option. There are two 5 speed conversions I know of - one from the UK uses Sierra T9 box and the other from New Zealand uses Toyota Supra 5spd. Both are expensive though.
