Back in 1980 I found our '69 XKE and started a long term affair. In those early years I would take a fall drive from Oklahoma up into Colorado, Utah and Wyoming, exploring dirt-road mountain passes and the fall foliage. Typical trip was a couple of thousand miles, and afterwards I'd straighten out the exhaust system bits that got hammered up into the car on those passes that really weren't made for an XKE. Funny thing all that, I was just a late kid in his late 20's who wasn't smart enough to know Jags weren't reliable. Fast forward - now I am in my 60's and still not all that smart - having recently put on 3,650 miles in 10 days driving snow-covered Colorado mountain passes and the high desert in Utah.
Since then a number of cars have come and gone, but the XKE is still here. In fact, she recently got a new exhaust system! And now has over 200K miles on her.
Our Elise joined us 7 years ago - perfect for those times we need a second car at a car show so we can run off and find lunch. Or a quick run to the coast for lunch. Best thing - my wife is comfortable driving her! Note the front end - cleaned up the boxy license plate protrusion and the lower whiskers!
And, most recently, stepped into a Bugeye - and going through it to make it ours. 1380 mill from MiniMania, 5 speed, and fixing all the dumb things previous owners have done. Of which there are a multitude.
The rest of our stable is eclectic - '73 Pantera, '04 Superformance Daytona Coupe, '92 AZ-1, Subaru Baja, '17 C4 GTS 911, '14 SLK, and '17 Smart EV... All focused on driving and going places! And yes, the Smart EV is an important part of our family - what else can one take to drive into the getto that Portland is becoming?
My automotive training consisted of getting my first car (a '55 Mercury that I bought for $30) back on the road, followed by restoring a Renault R16 that had been rolled and keeping a Fiat 850 spider on the road while I went to college. All that taught me three things:
Just do things right - don't cut corners,
Look at the rest of the car whenever you are working on it - see what else needs attention, and
These cars can be totally reliable.
As I can make time I will be posting a number of things I've done to make our XKE more reliable and easier to maintain. Gads I love that car.
