TR2/3/3A 4 speed gearbox issues

i have a 4 speed, fully syncro TR4 gear box, and am having difficulty moving the gear lever over to the right when in neutral. This started off intermittently but is now a regular occurrence. There is no noise/grinding, it just appears to be meeting resistance. There is no problem going the other way. It shifts into all gears fine once it has been moved over but it has gotten to the point where I sometimes have to knock it over and it goes all the way to where I could easily put it into reverse by mistake. One other note, for the 2 years I have had the car the lever has been free floating when in neutral. Put another way, it didn't return to the left side when in neutral.

Any ideas as to what is going on. I hope it is a simple fix as I'm concerned about putting it in reverse at 60mph or being stuck in 1st and 2nd.

Which shift lever do you have installed?

It should be simple enough to pull the lever and have a look. Perhaps there is some FOD roaming around in the selector cup, or the cap over the spring is coming loose/breaking. Come to think of it, the FOD might be the anti-rattle plunger, as they seem to fall out sometimes.
Once, many years ago, I had one of the selectors come loose from the shaft which caused some strange problems. One of the issues was that, with the gearbox in neutral, the selectors no longer lined up, so the lever wouldn't move side to side.

It's supposed to be "free floating" in neutral. On the later boxes, they didn't even tell you to pull up to get into reverse (although I still do).
