love that song. sad story, but a classic legend. I've always been entranced by stories of shipwrecks.
And now to make you feel old. It happened 8 months before I was born.
 
Old? I feel stupid. I thought that happened along time before that. I have trouble understanding the lyrics. Sound like the Swedish Chef singing about a chicken and a ping pong ball.

Do a Google searh for the lyrics. It's about an Ore ship that sank in Lake Michigan and is based on a true story.

Love the song; great to play on a 12-string.
 
Truth be told, I wasn't sure if it was a true story till this thread. You never know with them song writin' fellas.
 
I was in college in Michigan during the time. It was BIG news.

It is speculated that the bow and stern of the ship were elevated on wave crests allowing the middle of the ship to be out of the water. Hold doors may have broken loose, allowing additional lake water into the ship...the weight and stress of the above scenario broke the ship in half.

The ship has been located on the bottom of Superior.

May the souls aboard her R.I.P.
 
At my wife's urging, we saw Lightfoot in concert a couple of years ago (to be honest I probably would have passed on it). This guy sings about 20-30 songs - and if you were around in the seventies, you'll recognize and really enjoy most. Came away very impressed and would definitely recommend. I have seen Lightfoot at least 4 times as he used to play clubs in London Ontario. He is great.
On another note, National Geographic did a story on the Edmund Fitzgerald showing pictures after it was found. It lies in Lake Superior relatively close to Sault Ste. Marie.
When Lightfoot wrote and sang this song, the ship had not yet been found.

There are videos on youtube of divers exploring the wreck (I think in the 80s) there are shots of skulls and bones in various places one of a leg bone sticking out of a boot! And the divers are picking them up and looking at them! I wanted to reach into the video and choke them!!!
Those are the remains of those poor sailors, and that wreck is their tomb.
Visit it, document it, but don't mess with that stuff!!!

Not a diver but I've read of site locations being kept secret for exactly that reason. sad. no, stupid.
 
I've photos of the ship docked, used to ski around it in Ashtabula Harbor in my yout. The Great Lakes are anything but docile. "Freshwater Seas".

We learned to sail, ski and SURF on Lake Erie... Sounds like a joke but it ain't.
