3000 Fuel Pump Problem

My tank has fuel in it, but the fuel pump continuously clicks, while the carbs gets no fuel. I have read past postings about whacking the pump, which has not produced any results. Is there anything that I should try in repairing it before replacing the fuel pump? And if I do replace it, what is the best one to buy; and is Moss Motors or another mail order vendor the only place to buy it?

Original gas tanks had screens at the outlet. They can clog with rust or other debris and the fuel can't get to the fuel pump. You can disconnect the inlet at the fuel pump to see in fuel is getting there. Best to disconnect the battery, so that there is no chance of a spark when working around fuel. There also may be a fuel filter somewhere in the line between the tank and carbs, that could be clogged. If the gas tank screen is clogged, try blowing air back through the fuel line into the tank.
 
The reason to whack the pump is to get it to click. If it is already clicking, the problem is probably elsewhere, as shorn has described.

(I just replaced mine yesterday, it was leaking at the diaphragm)
 
I was on the road when this happened to me. Pumps clicking, but no fuel getting to the carbs. The fuel filter had gotten gummed up. Cleaned the screen inside and it fired right up.
 
If the pump is clicking rapidly the problem may be that it is becoming air bound. Check that there is no air leak on the suction side at either the fuel line tank connection or at the pump body. Also, the pump may be leaking air at the gasketed surfaces of the pump body or the pump diaphram.
