Hello all, Im going to tackle a 3rd gear replacement in my 74 Spit trany. I need to replace the syncro and gear. Are there any tips or surprises i need to be aware of? "Spitnewbie"

Hello S N,

it's a fairly straight forward job, but are you planning to change the layshaft gears as well? You will need to do this otherwise you will have a new gear running onto a worn one.
Why do you need to change the third gear?

Alec

Hello Alec,

My Spitfire is grinding going into 3rd gear leading me to believe that the syncro needs to be replaced. It would pop out of 3rd gear while driving. I had the gearbox out to change the clutch and opened her up to find a marred up gear. Im contemplating going with a rebuild from "Spit Bits" but need to weigh out the cost. It would help alot if i had someone to diagnose it first without the $200.00 fee. Thanks, "S.N"

Do you have a copy of the manual which explains how to take this apart? That is going to be the first step in diagnosing what is wrong with it. However if you say that the 3rd gear is marred then there is a good possibility that the laygear is also damaged.
As for popping out of gear, that may simply be a problem of a bad spring in the selector ring. To start taking it apart, you have to take the back of the gear box off first, remove the big nut at the end, the flange, and the spedo drive gear and all the bolts holding the alloy bit on. you should then be able to remove the tail bit.
Now you have to pull the shaft out which holds in the laygear, and let it drop to the bottom. Now it is possible to pull out the input gear. This really needs a slide hammer, but you can do it without. Be very careful since that input gear is expensive an very brittle. To get the other gears out you have to disassemble them in place.
there is a circlip which hold the 3rd gear in place. It happens to be a pain to get out. You should be able to see the layshaft at this time.

Be careful taking it apart, but I suspect that most places may not be willing to take a partially disassembled gearbox in as a core bit. Also as I pointed out earlier, unless you have a reasonable source for spare gears, doing it yourself is unlikely to be much cheaper (I just finished buying all the bits for mine) the ONLY reason I did mine is that shipping a block of iron overseas like that would cost a fortune.

Hello S.N.,

it sounds like you will need the third gear, layshaft and synchro. My feeling is that it's jumping out of gear because of this and probable bearing wear also.
If you can locate a good second hand gearbox that is your best bet.
