Never mind. I pressed ahead. The planetary washers were to thick- jammed the assembly, so I kept the old washers. There was a sun gear washer missing- with that replaced there is no play, but it still turns easily.

Thanks anyway.

I've been gone for a while after my rebuild a year ago, but I'm back now...

I'm replacing my original 4.22 differential with a 3.9. I thought I would replace the thrust washer on the sun wheels and planet gears. However- after disassembly there is no sign that the sun wheels ever had a thrust washer. At first I wondered if both could have worn away completely, but now I see in the Moss europe catalog that only the "late carriers" had them. How can I tell if I have an early 3.9 carrier, and can the fiber washers just wear away without a trace? There is a metal shim under one sun gear.

Also- the planet gear washers come in two thicknesses. Assuming that my original washers have wear and are thinner than when new (much thinner compared to the new washers from Moss USA), how can I tell which thickness to use?

The unit is otherwise in good shape. Should I just leave the old thrust washers?

Thanks.
