1 banged fender (45 minutes into our trip on the 9th), one flat tire, 2 quarts of oil and 9 hours of driving home 10 days later. Hooked up with a lot of MG people along the way, beginning in Grand Rapids at Twist's party. Great trip. Tired. More later.

That looks like a nasty side swipe. Everyone ok? Did you go back and kick that guard rail's butt? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

It was no guard rail, it was the big mean pickemup truck sitting next to her. We pulled it out, tossed the chrome strip (actually gave it to the owner of the truck as a reminder to USE HIS PASSENGER SIDE MIRROR) and proceeded on our adventure.

Left at 6am, got to the restaurant with 7 others. JUST brought the food out and a guy comes in, says, "Any of you drive an MG, I just hit it."

3 couples with MGs in the group sucked in a big collective gulp of air and Chuck said (in a weak, sickly voice) "What color?" 9 people held their breath and the guy said, 'greay.'

So much for breakfast.

good side is he actually came in and fessed up...bad side is (no pun intended) she's still crumpled...ouch!

There are no words more terrifying to hear while eating lunch. That just sucks, but if it had to happen, at least it happened in a parking lot rather than on the highway. Sorry to hear about that but as Bibber said, at least he came in and looked for the owner.

There are a lot of good things about this actually.

1-NO ONE was in the car and no one was hurt. It could have easily been an 18-wheeler on the interstate at 75mph heading to Grand Rapids.
2-The culprit didn't have to 'fess up. There was not a mark on the truck itself. The driver was about 60, very upset, (had nothing to do with my hands around his throat) hadn't had an accident in 30 years. Got in on the driver's side, we were parked on his passenger side, and as much as I didn't want to admit it, I can easily see where he couldn't have seen our car until he felt the bump. Notice size comparison!
3-We pulled out the fender, she was driveable so vacation wasn't ruined. And the bandaid and 'owiedammit' with the time and date written in black Sharpie on the fender made for great conversation through the course of 2500 miles!
4-John Mangles, our friend and paint & body guy - said, 'hey that's not bad, I've fixed much worse.'

Be glad it's steel rather than aluminum or fiberglass. And be glad the paint was fairly new. It will match perfectly.

Ah, that'll buff out, no problem at all. Now...I'll need about 30 lbs of buffing and polishing compound, an industrial sized buffer, a young priest and an old priest.

Ehhh...ya know, on second thought...better take it to your body guy. :p

Jaybird-

Congrats on a great trip, bummer about the fender ding.

BUT....................

Am I reading correctly the number 2500 miles?
Or is it a typo and should read 250 miles?

I was not aware these old British cars were capable of
more than a few hundred miles before they break down and
require major repairs. I think my all time record is about
70 miles continuous before the car broke down

Is the 2500 miles correct? Just wondering.

Janel:

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Glad that you had a good time.

Janel, you are taking this more philosophically than I had imagined, or is it that you have had some time to cool down? I'm glad that you had a good trip.

Your presence was missed! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Tinster, such blasphemy! I just returned from a 2,200 miles trip in a 1949 MG through 110-degree in the Mojave and Nevada deserts, over 9,000-foot dirt mountain passes in Utah and across roads where there are no signs of civilization for a hundred miles at a time. No problems to report. These cars are made for driving! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Our 100-6 goes 3 or 4 hundred miles a weekend, with never a thought of "will it make it"! Drive em!!

Actually 2600 miles, give or take a few.

You underestimate these cars Tinster! We have friends that just returned from a 22 day, SEVEN THOUSAND mile trip in their 80 LE.

And yes, thankfully it's just the fender. Door is a bit out of whack, but the hood *WHEW* is fine. Was the first thing I looked at before I checked out the fender. I was afraid we'd be hunting for a new aluminum bonnet!

Surprisingly, this episode didn't really bother me. After a spoonful of Simmerdown, I was fine. I was a bit rabid in the restaurant, until I saw the car, realized how upset the driver of the truck was. It is *GASP* after all, just a car and it's fixable. And the dingy didn't stop our vacation but led to many interesting conversations. Man, I whizzed across the border back into the states. The guard was much more interested in the car and the accident than whatever contraband I might have been bringing into the states.

Car's fixable, no one was hurt, nothing lost but Chuck's breakfast!!!

Sooo...

What'd ya bring me? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Vino, I have vino. But from Canada, only a case of Molson and a cheesy Canada hat for Bailey. Wine, wine, lotsa wine in NY.

Ahhhhhh, what was that thing at 2201? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

Great to hear all went well ('cept for the prang), Janel.

We did a Tampa-Cleveland-Tampa in the '64 MGB without a thought. Had to renew the generator brushes in Ohio but other than that it was a 'milk run' trip. In excess of 3K miles when all was over. I have NO qualms about long trips in it.

It also did duty as a daily driver with five years of 100 mile a day commute as well.
