24 Hours of Lemons

OK, I'm pretty close to Zero Hour for our 24 Hours of Lemons event in Stafford Speedway, Conn.

I was wondering where to put this post since our car aint' exactly a British car (1989 VW Jetta).

And to be honest, this ain't exactly racing in the normal sense.

So I've put it in The Pub.

The event takes place tomorrow and goes through Sunday.

Here's our webpage to date:

https://vintageracer.tripod.com/lemons.html

I was at a friend's shop late last night finishing up the seats, harnesses and alternator. Today, I loaded up my van with tools, generator, air mattress, spare parts, tires, etc. I'm leaving my place at 3:00 AM tomorrow morning.

The Lemons Jetta is getting pulled to Conn. by a friend with his welding truck. One of the guys driving will head down from Rhode Island and one driver is coming from Manhattan. Most of us are from New Jersey.

I was the second guy to join the team, and to date, I'm the only guy with a race license. They've asked me to drive, but I've made a conscious decision not to. I'd rather crew this one and see how it all turns out. Most of the drivers in the event (about 35 cars entered) don't have race licenses, and I'm not sure I want to be on-track while they're "learning". Besides, I've still got tons of real race events to go for '08.
Some of the guys on our Lemons team are keen to join me in a future NASA race team, which is more to my liking.

But I might drive a Lemons car next year if it doesn't look too sketchy.
Anyway, I've been having a hoot doing the mechanical stuff. We bought the car for $225 and our welder buddy (Dave) did the cage (gratis, by the way). Another driver (Steve) owns ~The Blarney Station~ in East Rutherford, NJ. (scroll down a bit on the link)

Steve's bringing tons of beer and food from his Pub. Even if we do terrible, we'll have a grand time.
Both Steve The Pubman and Dave the Welder are from Ireland (Steve's born in Dublin and Dave's from Kerry). Since I'm from Kilkenny, we hit it off famously. By the way, both of these 30-something lads have almost-new Carreras. Both have prospered well in the US.

Steve drove my MGB and declared it a better cruiser than his Porsche. But he wouldn't swap me.

One of the other drivers is from India, our team captain and driver is a lawyer from Australia and the other driver is from Eastern Europe somewhere.

We have one driver on the team who is actually US-born.....the rest of us call him the "weirdo". :jester:

I'll take pictures and maybe some video and post stuff next week.
Since we have no sleep-time planned (but ample celebratory fiesting), it may take me a day to get my bearings after this weekend.

Didn't I read about this in Car & Driver last year...is it an annual event?

Sounds like fun!

I'm envious and would love to partake in that someday. Keep us in the loop!

Why not just fly out there, buy a $500 bomber, strip it of all extra weight, give it a good tune-up, drive the 'you know what' out of it & leave it in the airport parking lot at the end of the weekend?

This is an annual event times six. There are six of these all of the US. We'll be in the New England event.
Car and Driver did run an article about Lemons.

Tony: The car must have a full roll cage, must be gutted, have NO lights and all glass pulled except front and back. A stock car wouldn't be OK.

We are hoping real hard that the crowd doesn't pick us for the bulldozer ritual.

So, the car can only be worth $500 but you put a lot more $$$'s than its worth in it?

I'm pretty sure the impetus for the event is to provide a catalyst to congregate with like minded obsessive compulsives and party for the weekend, all under cover of an "authentic" event. Which, as it turns out, is exactly what happened for your team...good on ya!

I read about the event last year and actually went to the website, but had no further inclination to proceed, I'm envious and hope you have a blast!

I just wish the "Irish Pub" lin worked.

Their website must be down.

I edited and referenced a Porsche Club link that gives some info about the joint.

~Here's~ the offical 24 Hours of Lemons

As some of you can tell (because I've chosen not to drive) I have some mixed feelings about this event....I hate the idea that the car may get crushed.
But I think it'll be fun to hang out with this crew for the weekend. :yesnod:
What I'm really hoping to do is to get these guys into the local ( ~NASA~ ) club-racing scene

You know I have read about this event, and I often thought that the perfect car for such an event would be an old style Bug. Sure you won't be the fastest out there, but when people start overheating and breaking down, you'll just be putting along.

I just heard about it today from Bennet French at Standard Performance in Hendersonville, NC. He's got a GT6+ he's going to run. Sounds like alot of fun.

I'm curious.
If it has no lights, and it's a 24 hour event, how do you see?
