So, lifted the hood, pulled the cover off the hood, spent the 13 minutes the mancode requires staring intently at the engine, closed the hood and called CAA and had them tow the car to my mechanic. Got a call today, had done every diagnostic exercise he knew and and a few he made up - then looked at the gas pedal and realized the variable resistor had come unplugged. Plugged it in and it's good to go. Only charged me 1/2 an hour diagnosis. I figure he spent three times that.
