Failure of the throttle body, or gas pedal sensors. Was the battery disconnected? There is a re learn process that can be done with a scan tool (VW specific, not autozone quality...)

You need to have someone re set the adaptations. If they can do that, they can look at the appropriate "address" and verify if the pedal sensors are working, and whether or not the throttle motor itself is responding on command. I know of no short cut.... sorry.

Oh wait, I did think of something. I don't think the ECU will let it raise the RPM if the brakes are applied. Check that the brake lights are not stuck on.

So, lifted the hood, pulled the cover off the hood, spent the 13 minutes the mancode requires staring intently at the engine, closed the hood and called CAA and had them tow the car to my mechanic. Got a call today, had done every diagnostic exercise he knew and and a few he made up - then looked at the gas pedal and realized the variable resistor had come unplugged. Plugged it in and it's good to go. Only charged me 1/2 an hour diagnosis. I figure he spent three times that.
