2 Things: Rotor and Flashing Regulator

I'm still trying to diagnose a smoking problem (thinking it's carb related) so I took the car (BJ8) out for a spin this morning...got towed back.
Narrowed it down to the distributor. Pulled the rotor out and it smelled burnt, like burnt windings in an electric motor. I remembered a discussion here re: bad rotors so I changed it out with new one and she started right up.
I would have been scratching my head for days if it wasn't for the knowledge you folks offer up here. THANK-YOU!

I've also purchased a new voltage regulator. Can anyone tell me how to flash it? The terminals are marked E-D-WL-F-B

Hi MH67
The Voltage Regulator is not flashed and only needs to be set up to accomodate the generator. To install it you can simply transfer the leads from the existing one on a one-to-one basis and it wil be wired correctly. I think: E=earth,D=dynamo,WL=warning light "Ignition light, and B=battery.---Fwiw---Keoke

Glad you found the problem. Even new rotors have been known to be bad. I don't think it has ever been certain whether a certain batch of Lucas repro rotors were bad or what. (Lucas brand rotors are not made by Lucas anymore.) They can fail due to a microscopic crack in the insulation. Some folks have found other brands of rotors that were more reliable. If the new rotor continues to work, save this rotor as a good spare & try another new one. If it is good everything should be fine. If not, try again until you have a good one plus a spare.

A new regulator would not normally need flashing. A new generator would need it. To flash the field, the safest procedure is to lift the D & F wires at the generator. Momentarily connect a wire from the car's battery to the F terminal for a second or two. Reconnect the wiring. (Engine NOT running for this procedure.)
