Post-War Other 2 heralds- $1000

Triumph65Chev57Conv1.jpg
Love it! I first saw this awhile back (maybe on BringaTrailer?) and saved the pictures. Someday I'll get them up on my web site (I was told it would be ok, so long as I give credit to the photographer). The car is pretty ragged now, but it looks as if it had been a very clever and well-done "custom" back in the day....

Were most of the Heralds imported to the USA convertibles? I imagine 2 door saloons were imported, it's just whenever I see Heralds for sale on Ebay or Craigs it's always a convertible and I've been looking for a saloon.

Yes, most were convertibles. Here's the breakdown (according to Graham Robson, with typical original prices in parentheses):

* Herald 948cc Saloon ($1849) -- 3,612
* Coupé ($2149) -- 1,049
* Convertible ($2229) -- 2,822
* Herald/Sports 1200 Saloon ($1699) -- 4,609
* Convertible ($1949) -- 11,654
* Sports 6 Convertible ($2499) -- 679

As with so many other collectible cars over the years, sedans often became donor cars for the "more desirable" convertibles. But the sedans do have much to offer as they are, including much more interior room and nearly 360 degree visibility (compared to a top-up convertible) from the inside.

Edit: there's an interesting sedan for sale in Huntsville (AL?):

The car looks as if it might have been well loved at one point, with the extra gauges, Spitfire engine, etc.!

Bill, you can see from the data above that the Sports 6 was rare here to begin with, and all of those originally sold in the US were convertibles. (There were some later sales of Vitesse 6 convertibles and sedans in Canada.) Those 679 cars, though, just couldn't compete in price with Falcons, Valiants, Novas and Corvairs at just about the same money. But they do still come up for sale occasionally.

There is a very nicely restored Herald at the Motorway Ltd in Fort Collins, CO that was looking for a new owner last I heard. Was even mentioned in the latest Classic Motorsports magazine in a small blurb on the shop.

Has had some upgrades done to it. Spitfire 1500 engine and I believe it has an overdrive transmission fitted as well.

You can always call Bill Wardlow and enquire. 970-472-8141

Don't show this to Andy. He will be on the next plane to come and get it. As for the other 2 in Colorado I got some more pictures from the guy. They are both taken apart or in stages of parts. It is hard to say what is and isn't there.

Alas, fat chance of THAT happening. Heck, I'm still 25 linear feet worth of deep snow from the road before I can even get to my mailbox!

That is a very nice looking sedan, btw. But I already have a "project" of that ilk in the works at some point in the future. It's a Canadian-spec. Sports 12/50 (originally Cherry Red with Cactus Green leather-faced seats, no less) that I picked up last spring. It appears to have lost its original engine many years ago, so I won't feel too guilty dropping in the Mk2 Spitfire engine and OD gearbox I've had stashed in the barn all these years! :driving:

There's always this one in CT if anyone has the cash:

Details at F40 Motorsports for those interested.

BTW, this is even more interesting than I thought, given a second look at the pictures. I see evidence that it might have been a "Personal Export Delivery" car; note the two little black "dots" on either side of the current license plate on the trunk lid. Often as not, those were originally there to hold the British number plate.

Shawn, if you might be able to get details about the car (commission number, etc.), I'd be interested in having the car on my Database. Sure, I'd like the car, too, but I already have a white sedan with red interior (see Avatar)!

Here is more detail about the 2 heralds in Colorado
This is an email I received from the seller. I also have a few more pictures if anyone is interested. I have personal ownership in the cars but do have an interest in them but not sure I can get them at this time. (My wife wants to go to Norway)

Here is the rundown:

1) 1961 Red (orginally white) 948 Twin Carb: The dash was pulled over the weekend. The upper fibreboard is bad, but the front of the dash and gages are intact. This was pulled with the wiring harness attached. It has the 948 twin carb, and the motor does not turn (tried doing it by hand). I shot some WD40 down the cylinders and haven't tried to turn it. The front bonnet is complete. Their are some holes from rust over the fenderwell on each wing. The windshield is there, and no cracks or chips. The tub has had pans fabricated and installed in the footwells, but the seat area back pan is not rusted through. Has the convertible frame (still on the car), and all trim is there. The frame is rusted and would need to be replaced. Other than that, the rest of the sheetmetal and doors are in great shape. It came with recently re-upholstered front buckets and back seat (Gray with white trim). Transmission shifts through all gears.

2) 1964? 1200: Dash is wood, and in need or repair/replacement. (Both cars have all gages). Windshield is gone. Bonnet has some dings and there are some dings on the body, but no major dents or accidents. Has two original buckets that would need repair. No rear seat cushion. Motor has broken rockers, but does turn over (starter works). original key. Transmission shifts through all gears. This one has had trim removed, but powertrain and wiring harness are intact. The frame on this one is solid, and the floorpans look good and unmolested. Has the convertible frame still installed.

3) Parts Boxes: Several boxes of new/old parts, trim, set of hubcaps, parts pulled mostly from the 1200, and more.
4) Engine: Extra 1147 engine. Has a few broken rocker arms. Haven't tried to turn it over.
5) Extras: Two other complete doors; trunk; front or rear valence, grill, and more.

would say there are parts here from at least two cars. His thought was to use the frame from the 1200 under the 948, or to transfer everything from the 948 to the 1200.

Unfortunately, it's not a straight swap between the two cars, as likely the "1964" has the later style, stronger chassis frame. It can be swapped but not without some work. Depending on how badly the other frame is rusted, it might well be repairable, with the end result being two Heralds saved!

Hey Andy, I'll see if I can find some more info on it for you. Been a while since I stopped in anyway. BTW, I believe this one now has a blue interior. I think you need a Herald with one of each. :driving:

Those photos are are from when it first showed up at The Motorway Ltd. It was a very good 10' car. The owner was very particular and it was stripped down and completely redone. It is MUCH nicer now. I'll see if I can get some better, more recent photos as well.

Come to think of it, I don't have any Triumphs with blue interiors.....WAIT! STOP! (Note to self: do NOT listen to them!)

That is one particular owner, as it looks pretty good to me! But then, I'm coming from the perspective of an owner of a '62 Herald sedan that is seeing its first full winter of driving in many, many years. Could've been worse, but I'm certainly starting to see the effect road salt has on the really poor bodywork and paint that was done long before I bought the car (talk about your 10-footer)!

Come spring, it will get fixed up again.... :whistle:

Hey. A guy here in Waynesville has 3 Heralds he offering up for sale. He said one was almost ready for paint. Didn't talk $$ with him as my attention was on other things the moment.

I was there to take a ride in his newest aquisition. My wife and three of his employees and I enjoyed a short ride in a 1948 GMC Greyhound bus! Way cool, but that's another story.

He let me veiw some of his "collection" afterwards in one of his buildings, which included a pair of E types, a MGB, an A that had been painted and was being put back together, a TR6, 59 Bugeye, (not frogeye, sorry), lots of other stuff; a 1927 Curtis (looked like a midget racer to me, the tub was aluminnum and appeared to be a cocpit from an old plane).

Anyway, he had three Heralds. I saw one. Under tarp, pretty rough.

I am hopeing to get into one of his other buildings to look at 3 GT6's he has...

This is not a thread I should read - my wife told me she wants a Herald.. I've been trying to lean her towards a Vitesse but the odds of finding one of those are pretty slim.

Andy, the VIN for this car is GB1039LDL, it is a '67.

The 1500cc engine in it has been hot rodded a little bit and with the overdrive transmission it cruised at 75-80mph down the Interstate between Fort Collins and Denver.

Here are some updated photos.
