That is the bore, which is stock on my newly arrived engine, looks like it has never been rebuilt. There is a lip so it is worn well but I don't have a methoid of measureing the inside, down inside, of the bore. Looks like .020 or .030 over will work. Will let my engine guy figure it out. At least .020 as long as I am doing it to make sure the metal is fresh in the bores. Will bore it before I order pistons.

LOL, it is a 948 of course.

Over the next year I will turn it into a 70HP screamer.

Valve cover came today, thanks Dan.

HS2 carbs - have

295 head = have

1275 exhaust manifold - have

block and crank - have

Flywheel will be put on a diet - have

All balanced, etc.

Have most of the bits needed but for pistons and will need to wait till it goes to the machine shop. Looks to me that it has never been rebuilt in 39 years although it does not have a number on it. Maybe was put back with stock pistons and bearings.

Why not just go 60 over my friend. That is what we have planned here.

My present engine is .060 over, we will see. That makes Miss Agatha a 998 cc Bugeye. Of course she has a standard crank in her. Hope this is the same but expect that it will need ground as well a bit. Well I have no problems with that.

I feel very lucky with this engine. It seems just fine for a rebuild.

We were looking at a 2.478 starting point as well and using 998 pistons and rods, that are 60 over :wink:

Still waiting for it to arrive from Fla.
 
I suggest that you do the first-pass bore to get an idea of what size oversize pistons will work. But wait until the new pistons are in the mechanic's hands before doing the final pass on the boring.

Exactly. My guy always cuts a bit small then hones to perfection.
 
I'll take the suggestion on the pistons one step sideways. Take the block to your engine guy first and let him use his bore gauges to tell you what pistons to order. Wait until the pistons arrive and let him bore the block for the best fit for the parts received. That way you only pay the shop for one machining operation and you're assured of a precision fit.

Ain't that the truth.

Machine shop will tell me what size pistons to get, they also do the final fitment with a hone. Working each hole to its own specs.
