Which is to say a rebuilt one - seems a little spendy to me as it doesn't seem to have a lot of go fast stuff except being overbored. Still, Hap has been making noises about an increased market for 1500's and I suspect this is further evidence of that.

rebuilt 1500 engine

that's what I was thinking

 why so it is - didn't even think to look at the expanded picture - makes the add odd though

If you finish the ad for the engine he mentions that is not the actual photo but just a file photo of sorts. He's a little over priced but it is a 'buy it now or best offer' deal.
I've talked to the guy about a trade of my spare engine's. Seems decent and he's not that far from me. Day trip with a pickup load of engine's.
I got busy and still am before I can get away for the trip.

It seems like a lot, and I would be a bit leery about buying a rebuild off of ebay, but I'll bet if you checked with Hap and a few others, a quality rebuild of the type described on a 1500 would probably not be far off of 3000 including shipping ect.
Rest assured though, If I were going to spend 3 grand on a rebuild, It would go to someone with the references and reputation Hap has.

Actually, I would not do a stage 1 rebuild for that amount, it's a good thousand bucks short of what my stage 1 engines cost, and I'm not sure I could stay under $4k with a 1500, due mostly to quality parts cost for that engine.
This might sound like alot of money, but if you check with the West coast LBC hot rodders, you'll see I'm under the money, mostly because of the cost of living here in SC is lower, and I'm most competitve with professional LBC shop who do a variety of work, including engine rebuilding, but my engine are normally built to higher standards than the typical LBC shop, due to the fact, I don't work on cars, just build engines, heads and carbs, so it work I do mre frequently, everything is blueprinted and nothing chanced.

The Ebay engine, looks to have the proper machine work done, however I prefer using tri metal bearings in my engine, but overall, there is alot of work there. Things I do differently, I use APT nitrited cams and APT's rockwell 60 lifters, vernier timing gear set, ARP fastner (head stud kit, rod bolts, and flywheel bolts) I also use new valves , new valve spring, new bronze guides. I also spent a great deal of time in detialing everything, all engine sheetmetal, gets degreased, paint stripped, beadblasted, and then prime, paint and cleared indivdually, so when it's all bolt together, all the new fastner stand out, I hated theover spray bomb after assembly look, an nicely built engine should look the part. Heck, just cleaning everything, paint when applies, and getting it all clean, including block, head, rods, crank, you name it, is aprox. $500 of the build cost, and maybe the toughest part of the job.

I'm not surprised Hap - and I'm not suggesting it is too expensive for a stage 1 engine. However, it isn't a stage 1 engine. Yes it has been bored out and checked over but other than that it is no hotter than when it came out of the car. That's what surprises me.

Yeah, the performance items offered in a stage 1 build is a hotter cam, and increased compression ratio, add a ported heasd to the engine and it becomes a stage 2 build, from there on, I just call the "fantasy" motors, normally at the point the customer has a goodies list he wants on his engine, roller rocker arms, aluminum flywheels, big valves, balancing and other trick goodies.

Drools all over keyboard.

Well I agree Hap, it sounds like when you're done its done right. This guy is close to me and I have a bunch of engine's cluttering up my shop. I talked to him about a trade deal for a rebuilt 1275 (I have the core) and the only thing I did'nt like is that he has a local cam regrinder do his cam's and they are'nt hardened after the regrind. They are slot drive and hopefully that means they have lube to each lobe. I have some new APT lifters and thought I could supply the cam. Sounds like he does the rest OK. I have a block that needs to be bored and a head that needs to be gone thru. The crank is 10 under and perfect. Cam chain good. This is out of an engine that came in a car that was 60 over on the pistons which is in my opinion too much. Block and head not surfaced and head gasket leak ruined both.
If anyone feels like taking a chance on a 1500 I have one that has been rebuilt and never run. Came with a large parts purchase.

I would expect a Stage 1 engine rebuild to be more than this guy is asking Hap. What I was getting at is a normal, nothing special, but quality 1500 rebuild, as described is probably going to cost 3000, or near to it, most anywhere.
