There was an earlier thread about jumping out of first gear https://www.britishcarforum.com/community/members/paullongbl.18115/ but I decided to start a new one since I have never driven with this gearbox so I don't actually know that it does that but it certainly should from the looks of it.

It looks like the springs and balls that ride on the teeth froze at some point and took out the splines. At any rate, if someone has a decent used 1st gear available I'd be interested. (Moss wants 489.95 for a new one). The teeth are not up to John's (CJD) standards either but I could live with that.

As strange as it seems, I have seen other sliders that were machined that way. I have no idea why, but I do believe the factory did it. I would not reject the hub just for those 2 splines. Now your 1st gear teeth could use some dressing...
 
Thanks for the reply John. You are absolutely right. I just took the second one apart (found it in one of my own bins) and they are identical, right down to the bad teeth. I can only guess that they were done that way to get the correct load on the balls.
