1st Car Show

This past Saturday I thought it would be fun to go to a local car show called the Annual Tobacco Trail Antique and Classic Car Meet in Lusby, Maryland. So we loaded up a cooler and off we went.

When we got there, I tried to pull into the spectator parking but was waved through to the entry line. I had no intention of entering my 6 in a show since it is maybe a 20 footer at best. So in an instant, I entered the show.

While driving through to my assigned spot, I found it difficult not to run into anything since my head was on a swivel looking at all the other cars. I was way out of my league!!

It was mostly OLD (1909-????)US Iron, muscle cars and 5 LBC's sprinkled about. I parked between a 56 Merc and a 66 GTO I think. I felt dwarfed next to the Merc. I think it was twice the size of our 6.

Wiped the car down and set up the folding chairs we keep in the trunk to settle down for a expected quiet afternoon.

We had a blast!! The 6 got more attention than I expected and didn't get to spend much time in the chair. Made some new friends and learned darned near everybody wanted or had some type of Triumph or MG.

We didn't win anything except the experience of being in a car show. We'll be doing it again soon.

Now, maybe wire wheels with red lines......?

Infectious, isn't it?

Now, you need to go to VTR in Valley Forge next month - you won't believe how many Triumphs you'll see!

Ah, but you won the best prizes of all: the new friends, the attention and the overall experience of being there! Sure, to YOU, your car might only be a 20-footer, but to almost everyone else looking at it, it's at worst a novelty and at best a REALLY COOL CAR!

Don't get me wrong: I've long enjoyed all-Triumph and all-British car shows, but ultimately I seem to have much more fun with my Herald in recent years at cruise nights and all-makes shows. No matter where I've gone with that car (including halfway across the US), there's a 50-50 chance I'll run into an ex-Brit who learned to drive in a Herald! Meanwhile, I get to walk around and see Packards and Hemi-Cudas and Crosley Wagons. I also get to see classic and modern street-rods and admire things like Triple Stromberg 97s on a flathead Ford, etc., etc. Best of all, I meet lots of great people!

I had a similar experience when I went 'just to look' at show at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I was waved thru as an entrant, then realized that to get to the show field you 'had to' drive a lap around the 500 track.

Needless to say, after that I had to spend the day.

I agree with Andy, the shows with more variety are most interesting for me, especially the casual ones. It's a hoot to see 50 or 60 TR3s lined up in one place but day in and day out the variety makes it more enjoyable.

The most TR3s (and 2s, 3As, 3Bs, a TRailer, a TRuck & a Doretti) I ever saw in one place. 1987 TRA, Hueston Woods State Park, Ohio -- anyone else from here in this picture?

This was in the days before TRA recognized TR4s -- just sidescreen TRs were officially included.

I got very lucky and won top Triumph at the show this weekend in Brookline, MA. We Triumph owners were upset when the organizers put us all alone, at the entrance to the main building, up above the "lawn" and far away from our friends down on the nice soft grass.

It turned out to be for the better. We were all together (about 30 of us at peak time) and we kibitzed about our cars in particular, though anything was open for discussion. The entrance was where they brought the concours Rolls Royce models from the 30's in and everyone ended up in our area at one time or another.

I finally got to meet Rob and his lovely wife and kids along with many others who are "lurking" out there, but recognized my BCF shirt and my car from this forum. I spent 6 hours talking about Triumphs and thoroughly enjoyed the day of making new friends and renewing old acquaintances.

Next event at the Larz Museum that I'll attend will be the annual "Day of Triumph" at the end of July.

It's an upcoming day in paradise...........

With Gordo being in Southern Maryland, Gettysburg is a natural.

Well done Paul!!
I'm sure it wasn't luck that won you the honor. Judging from the photos you post and your web site, your steed looks like new.
Regards
Craig
