1990 XJ6 37,000 miles Fault Code 17

Check engine light on; fault code 17, throttle pot or associated wiring - looks for throttle pot resistance out of range. Car is running great. Unhook battery, light goes out for about a week; comes back on. Car still running great. What is the problem; how do I fix it?
 
I'm no expert, but most likely is your throttle pot is worn and probably needs to be replaced. I've heard that the TP on some XJ models is notoriously troublesome.

I agree with the advice from Basil. The throttle pot will cause both check engine light and transmission limp home light to come on. Not neccesarily both at the same time. I think that your throttle pot has a rough resistance rheostat and it will turn on the check engine light sporadicaly. The throttle potentiometers for your model have been out of stock from Coventry and the total North American logistics for a half of a year. I have learned this week that they will be available within a month. Dont waste your time with a used component. I have been trying them to no availe. Order a new one, you need it.
