Try disconnecting the link to the auto lock solenoid and see if that helps. If the solonoid "freezes" or breaks in the right way, it could limit the travel.

Thanks, I disconnected the link from the key to the solonoid, I pushed the rod toward the solonoid and heard an electrical bum. However the lock mechanism still seems to be frozen? Do I dare force the lever forward were the linkage connects to the lock and runs to the lock flipper?

In order to actuate the lock with the door open, you have to pull the inside handle, and flip the lock bar at the same time. For testing, I trip the latch so that it is in the closed position.(the part that secures the door. Easy with a thin screwdriver) Don't forget to "open" the door before you close it. If it STILL won't work, you may need a "new" latch mechanism. Plenty of used ones around.

Re: 1985 XJ6 Drivers door lock

I solved my delima! The linkage from the outside handle was connected to a lever that was stuck in the up postion. This prevented the linkage that travels to the lock flipper to move forward. I tapped the lever to the outside handle down and it then let the lock flipper move forward to the unlocked postion.
The door opens!

I'm going to guess that the lever on the lock mechanism dried out, because on the passager side when I try to open the door from the out side, the handle stays up (though it does open the door). I am going to pull that door apart and oil / grease the lever.

My MK2 has similar stuff, and required all 4 doors to come apart and be wire wheeled and lubed.
The RR door had not opened in 30 years.

I used Amsoil grease, to see it it works better, long-term.
