Wedge 1980 TR7 Convertible value

I have a friend that has a 1980 Triumph Tr7 convertible I might purchase. Trouble is I don't know what the value of the car is, and neither does he. The good points are the body is solid, low miles (40,000) interior is nice. The bad is it needs carb work (it runs decent) the top is bad & the paint is going bad quickly. Would $1,000 be to much to pay considering this is not a big appreciation car & needs fair amount of TLC ?

Thanks

Tough question, Brad. But were I in your shoes, from your description, I would think $1000 a fair price. Sounds like the paint is original, and at nearly 30 years, it would need paint anyway. And carb work isn't all that expensive.

Interior and body work are, though. Make sure it's rust-free - check suspension mounts, and lift the carpets, especially behind the seats, for a look at the floor. Also, check the seam between the rear fender and the back of the boot lid. Notorious rust spots.

Oh, and as for appreciation, these cars are just starting to get serious notice. Good time for 'em, I think!

Let us know your findings...

Box- funny people tell me bad stories about Peugeots, but they never owned one ! The 82 Turbodiesel is at 385K and until I decided to fix the bad oil leak, its been nothing but reliable.
Thanks for the input on the TR7, the body looks good, the shock towers are solid. But, I need to make a closer inspection of the body - Id pass if it has serious rust issues. I didnt know what kind of $$ to offer him, but with the work it needs I cant offer much more then that, but being he's a friend I dont want to take advantage of that, either.
