We just pulled the motor out of our 1980 MGB. It does not appear to be the original motor (we found the number on the block, should it match the vin?) Also its red...is that original or should it be black?
OK, now another question, we bought a set of SU HIF4 carbs and a header. Is there going to be room for anything other than a pancake air filter set? It looks like it won't clear the Master cylinder. We haven't bought the air filters yet. I have heard the pancake filters don't provide the air flow you need and you don't get the power.
I could easily trade them for a WEBER downdraft like what's on the midget but I really wanted to try Dual Carbs (Like Jack says, I want to hear them sing)
Not sure about how much room is in there for a swap to dual carbs, but I can't imagine it to be that restrictive. Some of the others will have to weigh in on how/what it takes to do it. I know a few have BTDT.
Thanks Doc, I'll check back in this evening...I'm off to clean the engine bay and motor. I also get to try out Dave's wiring diagrams and wiring harness he sent months ago. Today is clean and begin the reassembly.
Maybe I;ll have some pics tonight.
Yes, engine should be black & engine number should start with '18V'. No, engine numbers are different from the vehicle identifacation number.
These are not Chevrolets.
UK spec cars had dual SUs until the end. You may be able to sourcs OEM air filter assemblies from the UK. Looked just like the earlier ones, except the 'horn' or 'snorkel' part was bent to clear the master cylinder with the booster.
Terri;
There was a post about filters awhile back.
It showed filters that fit this application.
I'm old and can't remember when or where but I believe they were K&N from Moss. Tony may have more info.
Dave
P.S. good luck with the wiring and be "Patient"
