Hi all, i just purchased a 1979 MGB but i dont have a book on it. To me right now it is an alien spacecraft. Does it have an overdrive trannie, and how do I tell?
Its been sitting for 17 years, and i am going thru the checklist one by one to start it.

Is there an "ON/OFF switch in the middle of your gearshift knob? If so, a '79 has OD, if not it doesn't.
 
OK thanks, I don't remember seeing a switch on the shift knob. Just a question I was thinking about on the car. Going thru the forums Q&A's.
 
Tony's post should give you the answer, but just in case the previous owner(s) did something weird with the gear sift looking from below would confirm it.

If you get the car jacked up SAFELY (always use jack stands) the other way to tell is that a car with an overdrive transmission. A car with an O/D will have a large somewhat square fitting before the prop shaft.

Here is a picture of what I believe an O/D on your car wuld look like

If your transmission is slender and just slightly larger than the prop shaft then it isn't an O/D.
