1979 LE console removal

Tomorrow I plan on helping a friend install a CD player in his 79 LE MGB. He is trying to remove the console and has encountered problems removing the shifter knob.He found a disconnected wire (maybe the cause for his overdrive not working) and it appears he cannot budge the nut below the shifter knob.He has an overdriive switch on the shift knob. Any help or tips will be appreciated.
 
Just remove the boot retaining ring and gently lift the console off (assuming you have removed the holding the console in place.
 
Is the nut under the shifter a locknut (I don't know the correct term when you butt 2 nuts together to keep them from moving - in this case it maybe butted up against the knob's internal threads), and he's trying to turn it against the knob threads instead of towards the floor so the knob will screw off? If that makes any sense.
 
Exactly, Kenny...screw that nut down towards the console & then unscrew the knob.
 
Xsteamer, if the jamb nut is jamed against the last thread on the gear lever and the knob is jamed against the jamb nut your only recourse may be to get a strap wrench and lever the knob off.The jamb nut is not going to move either up or down.--Fwiw--Keoke
 
Be careful....many DPO's have mess up those threads in the same situation
 
If it has an overdrive switch, pop the top off the knob. You will find a nut inside the knob. Loosen and remove the nut and the knob will come off.

Hey guys , Thanks for info Job is done . Tony and Kenny were right on about the jamb nut. and we found the wire to the overdrive switch disconnected. Connected it and viola he now has overdrive and is ecstatic!!!!
