Spitfire 1976 spitfire rear bumper question

hi all,
i have a 1976 spitfire and i have taken off the rear rubber bumber overrider things and the larger center bumper section cover. i figured this would clean up the look of the rear of the car. my question is can i remove the frame extentions and leave the overriders off? It seams to me that the only reason they are there is to support the overriders. Just wondering if i can do this thanks all.

The government dictated the use of those overriders, when did they change ? Bob

I have seen a few around here that drive around with the overrides off. Here in MD you don't need to pass any real inspection to get a "historic" plate. Next time I see one I will snag you a photo.

Here is what it looks like. Notice I have antique plates so I do not need an inspection in RI. The brackets and frame extensions were not on the earlier Spits. You can remove the brackets and fill the holes with chrome head bumper bolts for a nice clean look. I doubt the over riders would be much help if you were rearended, mostly for the parking lot bump.
