General MG 1974 MG midget clutch issues

I've got a 1974 MG midget that was sitting for years (with 50,000 original miles on the clutch) with clutch issues. After driving the vehicle in stop and go traffic for a period of around 15-20 min, or accelerating briskly (passing someone in traffic etc.) the clutch will slip. However, at the same time the clutch will also act like it is dragging when trying to put the transmission into gear (had to put in gear, grinding). I do not know what can cause a clutch do slip and drag. anyone have some ideas to check before I pull the engine and install a new clutch?

I suspect that there is a new clutch job in your future. I would add that the throw out bearing can fail and the clutch fork bending is a known issue.

It is a long shot but, I might rebuild the master cylinder and slave cylinder - the kits are cheap and WAAAY easier than pulling the engine. Check for pitting in the cylinders especially after sitting for a long time.

I agree, try the hydraulics first, relatively cheap and don't require pulling the motor. Though with the clutch slipping you are probably looking at a new clutch in your future.
