Around 65 MPH Charlotte's front end starts chattering and bouncing around. Any speed below that, she's solid and well-composed. What could cause this? My tires? Those blasted tube shocks?
 
Either or...best thing to eliminate first is the tires....have them checked for balance & roundness - put them on rear & see what happens
 
Rotate the wheels front to rear (don't switch left to right) and see what happens. Most likely you lost a wheel weight. It should only cost a few dollars to rebalance the wheel.
 
I have different tires on the front than the rear. The fronts are OLD Pirelli P77s - at leat 20 years old, in fact. Rear tires are apparently newer, according to the PO.
 
Time to re-shoe. Even at a few years old, tyres lose elasticity. Hardened shoes will cause all sorts of problems you can't ID.

I had the same problem on a 72 B...the tires were not round!!!! Thought it would rattle the fillings out of my teeth....go get your tires checked.

Hey Sqrrig!?! Hampton? Where'bouts? I lived a few blocks from Buckroe Beach for a few years... still kinda miss it.
 
You should never drive on tires over 10 years old regardless of how they appear. It is very likely to suffer a sudden sidewall blowout with old, dry, hard tires. And that's a very dangerous situation! On the plus side, new tires will transform the ride and handling of the car!
 
Beleive me, I want new tires. I even have new tires picked out already. I'm saving as much spare cash as I can...the new tires are only about $40 each from Tire Rack (so Basil gets a little bit of that action /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif). Tires and Rostyle restoration are at the top of my list for winter projects.
 
What're your plans for the Rostyle restoration? This is a topic I haven't seen much discussion on hereabouts, and it sounds like an interesting project.

I have found a few places online that outline the Rostyle restoration process. I plan on sand blasting the wheels, repainting them (I have read a few techniques for getting the paint masks to work), and clearcoating them for a "better than stock" look. A fellow in my MG club had his Rostyles clearcoated, they look gorgeous. I'll find the links and post them later tonight if I have time.

Loong ago. '70~'73. Rented "house" (a garage fixed up to rent out)... Had a neighbor (1st Lt) with a TF, we had three MGB's and the Elan parked beside that li'l house. Place looked like a British car dealership!
