GT6 1973 Triumph GT6 MK3 Engine for a TR6, yes or no?

Could a '73 GT6 MK3 engine work in my '74 TR6?

Am I drawing at straws now? Don't want to act
stupid, but had a guy get me a little excited at
putting in a good running engine to tide me over
while I sink some dollars a little more over time
into a nice '74 engine replacement.

Just not familiar enough with these cars to know.

It will rev much more easily and higher, be slightly smoother, but it will lack the torque necessary for the proper TR6 experience.

Also, comparing "stock" motors, horsepower is down significantly: 79hp for a stock late Mk3 GT6 engine v. 105 or so for the TR6.

I've had both a GT6+ and later GT6 Mk3 (both stock). While the latter car wasn't exactly slow, it was noticeably less quick than the GT6+.

Now, my buddy wedged an "improved" GT6 engine into his TR3. Woof, that is an experience to drive!

The TR6 is heavier than the GT6, & really needs the torque from the extra displacement to make it seem like a car with go.

I love the GT6 engine, like it better than the 2.5 litre TR6 engine, but in the TR6 neither the engine, car, or driver would be having a real good time.

TR6 engine goes in TR6. Different engine, different car, different requirements, different power output, different operational characteristics, different feel.

If it is available, cheap, and will get you on the road, and the reduction in performance is acceptable while you build up a TR6 engine, then what ever works for you seems the thing to do.

/bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/iagree.gif And he DID say that it was just to tide him over while he builds up a "proper" TR6 engine.

GO FOR IT!

Of course you could put a TR6 head on it then make up for the lack of low end torque by supercharging it. You'd get a 2.0L that'll rev to 7.5k and scream all the way.

Cost would be way less than a rebuilt engine from TRF...
