1965 BMC AM Radio - no sound

I purchased a used British Motor Corporation AM radio for my 65' Healey 3000. It came out of a 65' MGB. I'm not able to get it to work. I have it set to negative ground, plugged in the antennae, grounded the unit, checked the fuse, and hooked it up to the speakers. I know its getting power as the light goes on in the unit. There is no sound. Any ideas?

Also, what is the small barrel-like object that is bolted to the outside of the radio? Its about the size if your thumb and has a black wire coming out of it. I connected it to the ground wire, but that didn't help.

Hi HLY65, it is very difficult to ascertain the status of a non operational radio with out the benefit of a signal generator and a schematic. If there is absolutely no sound out of the unit this includes just plain noise in the speaker [at least a hiss] I would suspect that the unit has a faulty power supply but that is just a guess. You might take it to a repair shop and get an estimate to repair it if it is too costly look for another.---Fwiw---Keoke

How did you "Set it to negative Ground"-??--Keoke

Is it because there are no 1965 radio programmes being broadcast /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/lol.gif

Don't worry about it ! In my experience, you can't hear the radio anyway when the engine is running <G>

I suspect a highly likely cause of 'total dead radio' assuming that the speakers are connected, is a reverse polarity connection at some point in it's life. Remember it is likely to be using germanium transistors (don't like reverse volts "up 'em ") and the capacitors will all be fairly dried out by now. It's just possible that there is an internal fuse that's blown.
