what is the proper original color for the 1098 engine?

BMC green? I believe Moss carries it in a spray can. I have used Austin-Healey green from POR-15 on my Mini's engine which is also a 1964.

Yep BMC olive green, I suggest using Duplicolor Hi hgeat clear over the Moss engine paints, they tend to bleach if coolant ever gets on them. Here's picture of Drew's motor in BMC olive.
