OKAY...my engine compartment is stripped of everything that can be removed in preparation for the body shop....its all original, everything is in its original places with original fasteners.

Here's my question....the battery box area is painted black - looks like its always been there...its red under the black but the black appears to be some type protectorant (no rust either!!) The black extends under the heater box (which has never been out IMO)...

Could it have been lathered with a black protection coat in the factory?

Don't think so. Check page 59 or the Orginal Sprite and Midget.

Can't say for sure, Tony, but I would have to agree with Jack on this one and would offer the photo below from my '62 Sprite (origianlly red) in support.

Well, his foresight probably saved the battery area!!

...& tomorrow I'm running by the body shop to pick up a body dolly to strap the stripped body to - suspension is coming out from under car & I'm taking him just the body (gotta rebuild the suspension anyway) so everything gets a new coat of paint.

....& since I'll have it apart, anybody got a set of wishbones that are set up for a sway bar?

The Hertage ones from Moss come that way.

Geese Tony, "might as well" have Rickie sand blast and so forth as long as it is striped and such.

But on something like that, Jack, good OE used is the way to go!

Heratage A frames are pressed from the orginal dies as I understand it. They also come black powder coated.

No one can tell the difference and they will out last your great grandson.
