One thing for sure is that it is NOT a 1961 model. The wind up windows and exterior door handles came later....in 1964

It's more involved than that. The '61 had a flat windscreen. The next generation screen was slightly curved - like the one on your car. The '61, using side curtains, didn't have the vent windows. Even if the later door was fitted, the vent window wouldn't line up with the windscreen.

hello i found the vin plate on the frame of the drivers door it had been painted over the vin number is GBE049547 the engine number is 12v/671z/l5534

The 12V engine prefix is for a 1971-1974 1275cc engine, so it's not the original, but is a common upgrade.

The other number is not the VIN.....probably a body number,

ok its the same number on the title i was able to look those numbers up and it says its a 67 but says its a automatic transmission i guess when they changed the motor the put a manuel in

Check out this thread to find locations for the actual VIN on your Midget. It also indicates that the GBE number is, in fact, the body number. The 1967 in this thread shows a body number of GBE 058749. That number is about 9200 higher than yours. I don't know what Pressed Steel's numbering protocol was, but that might put you car closer to a 1966 model - possibly even 1965. I also don't know if those body numbers were specific to the Midget, or if Midget and Sprite body numbers came from the same batch.

What made you think it was a 1961? Previous owner told you that? Date shown on the title?

if this is the body number where is the vin number I found this number on the frame on the inside of the door ty for all your help

It's not uncommon to find a body number was used on the title instead of a VIN over the years since the DMV staff had no idea where the actual VIN was located.
The "automatic transmission" was a data input error by the DMV. No automatic trans was ever available in a Midge.

Go to the link in post #11. It points out where it should be near the right front shock mount.
