I picked this up today for my father. He does not know it is for him. My brothers and I hope to get is done by Christmas! Missing some parts (seats, radiator, grilletc ), but only some rust on the left sill. I think we can do it. Our first Mg! I'll be here alot with questions.

I'll get that list for you in the next few days. Picking it up had its problems as my rear brakes on my F250 died just as I arrived and the owner had to pull the trailer back home for me. As I left my truck at the local Ford dealer. Very nice guy and looks like we might be doing some more business on some feed for my cows.

I have a spare 1600 radiator (which I think is in good condition)if you can't find one locally.

If I get time this afternoon I'll make a list of missing items. It is a project but I think in 5 mos we can get her repainted and up and running.

You must have gone to the Evelyn Wood School of Speed Restoration! Were you in the same class as bob67bgt? :laugh:

After a little longer assesment, I've got a short list of the big items that the car needs.
VIN # 84236
1. Rear differential and axel shafts for disc wheels
2. gear shift, housing and cover for the housing
3. 4 hinges (boot and bonnet)
4. a grill
5 carbs, intake & exhaust manifolds
6. radiator and fan

The rest is going to be worn parts and rubber. The idea is to slowly get these items, but first get the car ready for painting. One sill should be replaced and the dog leg on that sides fender. For the rest, the car is solid and has had one repray since new. It has been parked since 1979 and the original owner was going to do a body off respray and restoration. He was taking the car apart when life got in the way. All the missing parts above were stored away from the car and were taken by some local @#! and what we have left is the car I have.

We think we will get the car painted on the frame (removing the fenders) and attack the motor and transmission out of the car. This way we can keep the car together as much as possible. Paint the frame under the floor boards when we replace them and get it back together, as a nice driver (no bumbers and a LeMans valence with a headrest fairing. I'll do the interior, I've got experience and a sewing machine.
Then we can all restore the remaining items on the car. Hopefully we will be done in 5 months.

So, if the manifolds and carb are missing....do we know if the engine runs or is toast?
Clutch?
Trans internals?

Have you tried to rotate the engine by hand?

In the Valley, moisture isn't the issue it is up here, hopefully the rings ain't stuck OR a valve stuck in a guide.

Might be helpful to pull the plugs and valve cover and rotate by hand to make sure no valves are hung up, AFTER you liberally oil the cylinders and visible valve stems through the open manifold ports.

The motor was rebuilt about 1000 miles before the car was parked. Turns over and was painted at that time (tape still in the spark plug holes) when he started to restore it. We will pull the block and trans and my brother the mechanic will go through them. With four brothers and skills in welding, mechanics and none afraid to work we can get it done. Our labor is cheap and hopefully we will not have any big suprises :cryin:

I have been doing this for a long, long time, and have seen especially new engines, never run, "stick".

If it's fine, good enough.
 
Replacement Panels & Factory Primer

First Questions:
Got a few minutes to start work on the car. We getting our ducks in a row and making lists of parts and making a plan. I have even recruited my 16 year-old nephew into the project.

Looks like we will need a right rocker and maybe a dogleg for that side. We removed the door on that side and by all indictations the car looks to have been originally red. I know a Heritage Certificate will give us the diffinative answer. The way things look we have a respray over the original red. Then we see what looks to be the original primer (black).

Does this seem to be correct?
Who provides the best replacement panels for the MGA?

Not sure on panel quality, likely Moss if only due to parts being the same and you could pick them up with some savings at Triumphs Only in Stockton.

An update on Norma........The doors and bonnet are in primer (thanks Billm). The interior components now together. Black leather seats and all new vinyl door cards, rails (made them myself)and side curtain holder. An orignal steering wheel was found and restored. M/C rebuilt and today I put on a test coat of single stage polyurethane (got a half a pint) on the interior of a door to see if we like the color. Looks like Ferrari Red. It is growing on me :thumbsup: What do you think? The inner door skin is still the original color that came on the car (I'll leave that alone so some in the future can go back to it if they wish.


Still have lots of body work ahead but I just wanted to get a color picked out so we could keep on with the project.
