TR2/3/3A 1959 TR3A speedometer and tachometers?

While I was trying to track down the key codes for my TR3A (in storage), I noticed that the speedometer had been swapped for a TR4/4A one (flat glass too) so I need to pick up at least a rebuildable core.

I'd like to get the correct one so wondering if anyone else who has a 1959 could tell me what your speedometer and tachometer model numbers are?

Thanks!

Scott

Scott,

I may have a set for your car. Let me know the numbers of what you need. The set that I have are in great shape. They have both "supposedly" been professionally rebuilt before I got them. I can neither confirm or deny that. The previous owner owed me for some new TR6 parts that I gave him, but had no cash, so I swapped his debt out. I lost on the deal. What I ever thought I'd do with these gauges for a TR3, I'll never know, but it was better than nothing and I felt bad for him. PM me if you want pictures.

I don't think that these lenses are flat though. Hmmm???

Flat lenses didn't come in until after the TR4 was introduced.

Sorry I don't have the numbers handy, but note that the speedo changes depending on which tires & final drive your car was delivered with. My 59 had 4.10 gears originally and is the only car I've seen with the correct speedo calibration for the short gears.

Numbers on a TR3 59 speedo I had handy are SN 6319/00 under the dial indicator and under the odometer 1184. Not sure if this speedo was from an overdrive model or not.

Funny, on my non-overdrive '59, I have 1402/09 on the tach, and 1180 on the speedo. Perhaps Don will chime in here.....

Tom, on the face of the gauges, just under the indicator...

Karl,

Thanks, that's one of the numbers my documentation is showing for a TR3 with a 3.7-1 differential although it also states that it was changed to SN6319/06 after 5/56. Note that the speedometer doesn't change with overdrive. It only changes with other variables such as differential or even tire types (there were different models listed for the TR4 for 590x15, 155x15 and 165x15 tires and the 3.7-1 differential and another three for the same tires and the 4.1-1 differential).

The only other confusion from that documentation (an old Nisonger catalog page) is that it shows my tachometer (RN1402/09) is supposed to be a TR2 and it shows the TR3 as using a RN1411/00.

Unfortunately, no idea what the difference would be on the tach side.

Kevin,

Your tachometer number is the same as mine despite the documentation I have which sounds good! There should be an SNxxxx/xx number on the speedometer in addition to the 1180 (1184?) number. If you can find the second number that would be great!

Scott

TS39781LO had speedo SN6307/10, calibration 1325, which would match the book figure for the 4.1 axle & Michelin X tyres (552 rpm @ 10 mph).

Tach was RN1402/09

Randall ended the mystery on the glass and I checked mine. They are flat, so they must be TR4. At least I know, so that was a plus.

Randall,

Thanks for the additional model numbers. Looks like the models in the Nisonger page I have aren't accurate as to when they stopped using the SN6307/xx and RN1402/09 speedometer and tachometer(since they indicated TR2 only) and moved to the SN6319/xx and RN1411/00 speedometer and tachometer.

Paul,

Thanks for the offer and for checking what you have! Since this restoration is far off in the future, I'll just have to keep an eye out on eBay for one with a good price.

I assume you know that the glass can be easily swapped to get the curved face. I didn't see where you said what your speedo was but the difference between 1180 ans 1184 is trivial I think -- tire selection, claibration and age of the hair spring will have more effect than that.

The one other difference I think I have seen is whether the red line is a line or a red wedge for the excessive RPM range.

Mine look like the bottom gauges.

TexasKnucklehead,

Thanks for pointing out the different location for the MPH/RPM text! Couple of questions about your pictures though. Why do you have pictures of the same(?) TR3 dash with TR3 and TR4/TR4A guages?

Second, my TR3 has the tachometer on the left and the speedometer on thr right which is the same as my TR4A's. Are yours swapped for a reason?

Scott

Well...
I got some TR4 guages with curved faces and put them in my dash, then I found out they weren't right. So I went to great lengths to correct that -or at least make it look 'better'. When I got the car, the tach was on the right. Here's pictures of when I got it. The ammeter is scarry and proves the car's story -it floated out of it's garage during a 20' storm surge during hurricane Katrin.

Oh that is sad to see. How badly did the water damage the car (engine etc?)?
